Alisa Fleming, www.GoDairyFree.org ~ I still have memories of going strawberry picking with my mother every year while growing up in Portland. We would pick an entire flat (okay, my mom would pick a flat, I would pick a bucket, and my sister would just sit there eating the berries off the bushes), and my mom would magically transform those bright red berries into a freezer full of homemade jam. While I loved the jam, a nice Strawberry Pie (such as the one below!) would have been a welcome change of pace. The following recipe is from The Bob's Red Mill Baking Book. We have altered it ever so slightly to use margarine rather than butter in the pie filling (making it both dairy-free and vegan), but the rest was left untouched. Happy strawberry season! ... |

Summer Barbecue Ideas without Milk, Eggs, Nuts, Gluten/Wheat, Corn, and Soy |

Foods Matter, July 2008 ~ Barbecues are great for food allergic/intolerant people as they allow you to tailor your food to your own needs without it looking very different to what anyone else is eating. Moreover, the flavour given to your ingredients by cooking them in the open air over a charcoal fire means that you have little need for sauces or dressings which might harbour ingredients that you cannot tolerate. Barbecues often seem to consist only of meat, which is not much good for vegetarians or those who are less than enthusiastic about chunks of bleeding steak! However, there is no reason why you should not cook a whole range of fish, vegetables or tofu chunks on your barbecue ... |

Craving Cinnabon? Have a Bowl of Cereal |
Wednesday, 02 July 2008 |
Alisa Fleming, www.GoDairyFree.org ~ For years I have been teased by the smells of Cinnabon every time I walk through an airport terminal or take a stroll in the mall. Completely off limits for dairy-free consumers I consider it a mild form of sensory torture. Yet, while those flaky desserts may always be off-limits, Cinnabon has come out with a breakfast cereal that is quite suitable for non-dairy dieters and those who want a slightly nutritious twist to their sugar cereal. I am not sure what prompted the 180 toward healthful ingredients, but the new Cinnabon Crunch cereal has a completely legible food label and a relatively short list of ingredients that includes whole oat flour, whole brown rice flour, fruit juice concentrate, and Makara® cinnamon. Need more temptation? You can get coupons for Cinnabon Crunch and read our Dairy-Free Mom's Review on this new cereal. |

Got Milk Allergy? What the Labels (and Docs!) Don’t Tell Us |
Tuesday, 01 July 2008 |
Robyn O'Brien, www.AllergyKids.com ~ According to CNN and a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Immunology, milk allergy is the most common food allergy, having established itself in the number one position in the last ten years. Interestingly, a new protein was introduced into the American milk supply just over ten years ago. Children with a milk allergy see the proteins found in milk as “foreign” which in turn triggers an allergic reaction. Are these recently introduced proteins responsible for the milk allergy epidemic? You decide. What the leading pediatric allergists (funded by Big Food and Big Pharma) failed to tell us … |

The Most Popular Dairy-Free Summertime Recipe |
Monday, 30 June 2008 |
Alisa Fleming, www.GoDairyFree.org ~ For years now I have been posting dairy-free recipes from my own kitchen and from other great bloggers who have graciously shared their ideas. But one recipe never ceases to get click after click, particularly in the summer. It stands out as a beacon for creating dairy-free "ice cream" without (yes, I said without) an ice cream maker. This recipe is so deliciously simplistic, yet even with its ease, the author graciously includes how-to photos to step the reader through. So without further ado, the most popular summer recipe on all of Go Dairy Free ... Banana Ice Cream and Toasted Coconut Bites from the Leftover Queen. |
